Gold Coast Beach Parade unveils mascot ‘Burleigh’
A baby koala blimp was flying high over Burleigh Beach on Friday morning to mark one month until the Gold Coast Beach Parade.
Measuring in at 5.3 metres wide and 6 metres tall, ‘Burleigh’ the koala blimp was unveiled as the mascot for the event, which will take place on May 16.
Organiser Leanne St Geroge told myGC the event hopes to set a world record for the greatest number of people wearing koala ear visors involved in a beach parade, as well as raise funds to protect koalas.
“Gold Coasters will walk from Burleigh Heads down to North Burleigh on the beach, turning and coming back. It’s single file, so you will see this amazing length of people wearing their bright pink koala ear visors,” she said.
“Most importantly, we are raising money for our furry residents, the koalas, through our charity of choice, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation. Who doesn’t love saving koalas.”
Vet nurse Renee Lowrey said the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is thrilled to be part of the event.
“This is a massive thing for the hospital. It’s a great way to get the community involved… and hopefully funds towards saving our koalas,” she said.
Entry fees for the Gold Coast Beach Parade will go directly to the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation to support the Gold Coast’s koala population. Entry fees are $25 per person, $80 for a family (up to 4) and $200 for a company/sporting club/school (up to 10).
The Gold Coast Beach Parade will be held on May 16 at Burleigh Heads. For information or to register, visit
