Giant White Hand — Splendour In The Grass

Splendour In The Grass is one of Australia’s most sought-after music, arts and youth culture festivals, attracting thousands of devoted fans each year. Since launching in 2001 near Byron Bay, the event has built a reputation for selling out rapidly and for delivering a carefully curated experience that blends music, art and large-scale installations. In 2010, the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary with a temporary move to Woodford, Queensland, welcoming thousands of attendees eager to be part of the milestone event.

Designed by artist Carl Scrase, the Giant White Hand inflatable sculpture was created as a bold artistic installation within the festival landscape. Reimagining the universally recognised peace sign at monumental scale, the concept aimed to create an instantly identifiable feature that could rise above the crowd and contribute to the festival’s creative atmosphere.

Constructed as a large-scale outdoor inflatable, the installation was produced using durable materials and reinforced tethering to ensure stability in outdoor weather conditions. Its oversized form allowed the sculpture to stand tall across the site, making it visible from multiple vantage points throughout the event.

Beyond its visual impact, the inflatable quickly became a natural meeting point, navigational landmark and popular photo backdrop for festivalgoers. Combining art, symbolism and large-scale presence, the Giant White Hand demonstrated how custom inflatables can enhance live events, create memorable experiences and contribute to the identity of major music festivals like Splendour In The Grass.
