Smith’s Spy Potato — National Potato Chip Day

Sydneysiders were treated to a bizarre sight as a mysterious and giant spud-like object floated above the skyline. As curiosity spread and cameras pointed skyward, it was soon revealed that the floating potato marked the return of Smith’s Chips’ mischievous 80’s mascot, Gobbledok, celebrating National Potato Chip Day in true larger-than-life style.

Created as part of this playful campaign, the giant inflatable potato was designed as a tethered helium balloon to capture attention and spark conversation across Sydney. Positioned above Dudley Page Reserve, the floating “Spy Potato” became an instant spectacle, encouraging onlookers to look up, take photos and share the moment across social media using #SpyPotato.

The custom inflatable was engineered to support the suspended weight of the iconic Gobbledok beneath it, requiring reinforced attachment points and carefully distributed load support to ensure safe and stable flight. Designed with realistic shape and surface detailing, the giant potato remained recognisable from long distances, delivering strong visual impact across the skyline.

Playful, unexpected and highly shareable, the floating potato transformed a simple vegetable into a memorable brand activation. The result demonstrated how large-scale helium inflatables can create buzz, drive social media engagement and turn promotional campaigns into unforgettable public moments.
